Every now and then, the local newspaper folks like to offer their readers a little something different. Hickory golf fits the bill like nothing else, well, except for perhaps the carnival coming to town. Both involve rarely seen costumes, unusual gear, and prodigious feats of skill.

In Galesburg, Ill. this past May 22-23, the Register-Mail newspaper sent photographer Steve Davis to capture some of the flavor of the Mid American Hickory Open at the Soangetaha CC. Davis, thinking like a pro, used black and white for his feature photos, which go nicely with the retro nature of the sport.
