June 21, 2027

Never been to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula? Here’s your chance to visit one of the country’s northern beauty spots and get in a challenging hickory golf test.

The Front 9 Endurance Golf is a one day event held on the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge (KML) golf course in Copper Harbor, Mich. It is connected to the celestial event of the summer solstice, which marks the official start of astronomical summer and the longest day of the year. This event also celebrates the anniversary of when KML was designated an International Dark Sky Park.

KML is a hickory-only, walking-only golf course. As such, this is a hickory-only and walking-only event: all players must walk the course and must play with hickory clubs.  Do not own hickory clubs? KML rents hickory sets (right- and left-handed) — reserve ahead, as sets are limited.

The Front 9 Endurance Golf will go all day, from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. on June 21. Tickets are limited to 25 participants. Last day to purchase tickets ($75) is June 19. To purchase, simply email John Mueller whose email address is listed below.

The Keweenaw [pronounced ‘key-wah-naw’] Mountain Lodge was established in 1934 as a  privately-owned four-season historic resort at the top of the Keweenaw — a lodging establishment focused on outdoor activities, rustic worldly food, and education for our cabin guests. “We work to marry history with the future to get to a vibrant and progressive present, and limit the amount of people that are on property in order to improve the guest experience,” Mueller says.

KML was built under the Civil Works Administration (CWA) and Works Progress Administration (WPA) programs, established in 1934, when Franklin D. Roosevelt was the president of the United States and the country was going through the great depression. As of 1980, the Lodge is on the National Register of Historic Places, and as of 2018, is privately-owned.

The golf course at the KML is a historic wilderness 9-hole golf course designed using the Keweenaw terrain. The condition of the course is shaped by nature, not by water and sprinklers — which means the conditions change each day. As a certified Audubon International cooperative sanctuary golf course, we follow environmental stewardship principles.
