Hickory golfers from Nebraska, Kansas and Iowa got together on Sunday, June 1, at The Golf Club at Table Creek in Nebraska City, Neb., for the first NeKaWa Cup.
The event is to promote camaraderie and play between regional players from Nebraska, Kansas and Iowa. Central to the NeKaWa Cup is an 18-hole match-play team event. Players will be assigned to one of two teams with their individual matches vs their opponent determined by SoHG or GHIN handicaps and compatibility, with as much parity as possible. Players were also matched to mix the states as much as possible. As an added incentive, low gross and low net were recognized with a small trophy.
Dale Hallock reports that the event was a success on all levels, from simply getting together to enjoy hickory golf to experiencing a great course. Players were sorted into two teams named for Walter Hagen and Bobby Jones. In the end the Hagen Team won by 7-3.
Chris Conklin fired a one under 70 to capture the low gross, and David Dunigan ran away with the low net with a 58.
The players are looking to build on this great event with a second event planned for next year. A good way to encourage the growth of hickory golf with regional competitions.
