My first hickory ace came on July 11, 2023. A friend of mine called a couple days before and asked if I could fill out a foursome at Northern Bay in Arkdale, a resort course in central Wisconsin known for its replica holes. I was the only player playing hickory clubs. We played the back nine first. The second hole played to 154 yards and the green is surrounded by condos with a valley between the tee box and the front of the green. My shot, with a spoon, was a bit of a line drive and I knew I had to hit in front of the green to avoid hitting the green and going over. When I saw it hit the front, I said, “well, that’s good . . that should stay on” and I reached down to pick up my tee. My friend kept watching and said, “Teddy, that might go in.” There happened to be three or four groups of people on their condo decks and they erupted in cheers, so I knew it went in. One lady was on the deck of her third-story condo. She is not a golfer, but she is a history buff and when she saw it was with a wooden shafted club, she had to come down and inspect it. I’ve attached a pic of our group and of a video I took as my playing partners were sharing with spectators. There were only three retired guys in the bar when we finished and two of them had already had their two-beer limit and they both had to drive home. The third said, “Well so have I, but, my condo is right there, so, yeah, I’ll have a third.” The whole round cost less than $30.
